Why conversation practice beats grammar apps if you need to speak

Grammar apps train recognition. Conversation trains retrieval under time. Those are different skills. A streak of matching pairs will not teach you to hold a turn, interrupt, or land an ask. If you already read English and still fail in meetings, you do not need more input games. You need live output and a record of what you said.
What do grammar and streak apps actually train?
They train you to pick the right form when the options are on screen. That is useful for beginners. It is a poor match for a stand-up. In a meeting nobody offers four buttons. You have two seconds and a face.
DeKeyser’s skill-acquisition line is blunt here. Comprehension practice builds comprehension. Production practice builds production. You do not get the second for free from the first.
Why do people who “know the grammar” still sound weak in English?
Because knowing a rule and retrieving it while someone talks over you are not the same memory. Swain called this the gap between intended meaning and available form. You feel it as hedging. Maybe. Kind of. I don’t know if this is useful. The grammar is in the book. It is not in the turn.
Conversation also trains things no drill lists. Floor management. Register. The length of a decision sentence. Those are the failures that cost a meeting.

When should you still use a grammar app?
When you cannot yet parse a paragraph like this one. Then input and form study are the job. Do not skip them. Do not stay there once the bottleneck has moved to speech.

You can learn a lot of recognition and some vocabulary. You will not learn to run a meeting. Switch to live conversation when reading is no longer the hard part.
Are grammar drills a waste of time?
No. They are the wrong tool for a production problem. Use them for form. Use conversation for retrieval.
What is the fastest way to get better at speaking English?
Short, frequent sessions on a real topic, out loud, with interruption and a review of the transcript. Not a longer streak of taps.
