Salary raise negotiation mistakes in English
Eloquent Coaching Team · 28 August 2026
When negotiating a raise in English, common missteps include hedging your numbers, listing routine tasks rather than actual results, and rushing to fill the silence after making your ask. Sometimes people apologize for bringing it up or accept an initial counteroffer too quickly. Try to drop the filler words, state your number clearly, and then give them a moment to respond.
Which spoken habits bury the number?
Your target number often gets lost when surrounded by filler words. Saying something like 'I was wondering if maybe we could look at...' comes across as a gentle hint rather than a firm request, leaving the other person room to gloss over it.
| What you said | What they heard |
|---|---|
| “I was hoping we might revisit compensation.” | This can wait. |
| “Would 90k be crazy?” | You will take less. |
| “Sorry to even bring this up.” | You do not believe the ask. |
Why does a duty list fail as evidence?
Listing your daily tasks simply shows that you are doing your job. It doesn't prove that your scope or impact has grown. Saying 'I run stand-ups and manage hiring' sounds like a calendar readout, whereas 'I hired three people and cut time-to-fill by a month' makes a compelling case.
If you catch yourself naming meetings or tools, pause for a moment. Try swapping that list for a clear before-and-after example instead.
What happens if you fill the silence?
It is natural to feel anxious and keep talking after stating your figure. However, doing so often causes people to negotiate against themselves. Adding 'but I'm flexible' takes away the other person's chance to process and respond to your original request.
- “I am asking for 92,000.” Then wait.
- Instead of: “92,000, but if that is too much we can…”
How do you catch these mistakes before the meeting?
Try stating your request out loud beforehand. Pay attention to any apologies, hedges, or extra conditions you tack onto the end. Usually, just one practice run is enough to spot these habits.
Eloquent gives you a space to practice this live. The transcript debrief is especially helpful for catching those subtle filler words when you review the text.
Frequently asked questions
Is thanking them for the meeting a mistake?
A quick word of thanks is perfectly fine. However, spending a full minute showing gratitude before getting to the point can drag the conversation down. It is best to introduce your figure right away.
Should I accept the first counter?
It is usually better to calmly restate your original number first. Accepting their initial counteroffer right away signals that they can start low in future conversations. Take a breath before agreeing to a shift.
What is the fastest way to hear my own hedges?
Simply speak your request out loud without looking at notes and listen back. While typing makes it easy to edit out padding, speaking freely tends to reveal where you naturally hesitate.
