Practice English on topics you already know. Random small talk uses thin vocabulary and dies after two minutes. Content-based instruction treats the language as a tool for ideas, not as the subject. If you work in product, law, or ops, rehearse those rooms. You stay in the conversation longer. The words stick because they carry a decision.
Why does talking about “anything” fail for advanced learners?
Hobby small talk is fine for A2. It is a trap at C1. You already know how to order coffee and talk about the weekend. The failure is the quarterly review. The clause. The forecast. Those rooms use a different lexicon and a different rhythm.
When the topic is empty, you run out of content before you run out of grammar. The session becomes polite noise. You leave with no sentence you will reuse on Monday.
What does the research say about interest and content?
Content-based instruction (CBI) puts subject matter first. Richards and Rodgers summarise the claim. People learn a second language more successfully when they use it to get information, not when the language is the only object. Widdowson made the same point in 1978.
Motivation research points the same way. Dörnyei treats interest and relevance as situation-level drivers. Not decoration. Edsall and Saito’s review of CBI in university settings treats interest, relevance, and authenticity as the reasons content keeps adults talking. A 2024 case study on conversation clubs found that speech anxiety dropped when the talk sat on personal interest. Not on a scripted unit.
None of this proves a miracle method. It says empty topics waste the hour. Relevant topics buy time on task.
What should a professional actually talk about in practice?
- The meeting you have this week. Not a generic “business meeting”.
- Today’s news in your field, if you will be asked for a view.
- The negotiation or the ask you keep burying.
- A claim you hold and can defend for ten minutes.
If you cannot name the decision, the topic is still tourism English with a blazer on.
How do English apps handle this?
Curriculum apps (Speak and the lesson-path tools) pick the topic for you. That is correct for beginners. It is the wrong default once you can already read this page. Conversation partners (Loora, TalkPal) let you wander. That helps volume. It does not force the room you will enter on Tuesday.
