How to present in English as a non-native speaker

Present in English by stating the ask in the first 30 seconds, putting one number on each claim, and rehearsing the hostile question before you walk in. Slides hide filler. Speech does not. Practice the opening, one challenge, and the close out loud. Then review the sentences that buried the ask.
What fails in a presentation that slides will not show you?
The deck can be clean and the talk can still fail. You warm up for too long. You put the ask at the very end. You lose the first question and never recover the frame.
Reading English is simply not the same skill as holding a three-minute turn with a face in front of you. The room punishes hesitation. It does not punish missing articles.
How do you open a presentation in English?
Name the purpose, the timebox, and the ask. Do not start with a long thank-you, and do not recap the last six months.
- Purpose: “This is the delay on the beta and the ask for two engineers.”
- Timebox: “Three minutes, then questions.”
- Ask: “I need two engineers for six weeks.”
Say it out loud once before you join. If the first sentence dies, the rest of the deck will not save it.
How do you keep evidence short enough to land?
One claim. One number. One consequence. Then stop. A long explanation is exactly where the ask gets buried.
- “The API mock slipped eight days. That pushes the cut to Friday.”
- “Two engineers for six weeks. Without them the date moves again.”
Avoid phrases like “it would be nice if we could maybe get some help”. Name the resource. Name the duration.
How do you handle Q&A without losing the floor?
Answer the exact question you were asked, then return to the ask. Do not let a side thread become the rest of the slot.
- “Two sentences on that, then back to the hire.”
- “That’s a different decision. Today I need a yes on the two engineers.”
- “I don’t have that number. I will send it by 16:00. The ask stands.”
How should you practice this before the real room?
Roleplay the audience, not the slides. Practice the opening, one hostile question, and the close. A live coach that interrupts you will expose the filler faster than rehearsing in your head.
