How to ask for a promotion in English

Eloquent Coaching Team · 28 August 2026

When asking for a promotion, directly name the level you are aiming for, highlight the work you already do that matches it, and ask for a clear decision date. Instead of asking if they think you are ready, confidently state your case. Find out what documentation the packet needs, and if they can't decide, find out who can.

How do you state the level without asking for permission to want it?

Be upfront about the title you want. Avoid asking if they 'see you getting there someday.' 'Someday' is a vague hope, not an actionable process.

  • “I am asking to be put forward for Senior this cycle.”
  • “The work I am already doing matches that bar. Here are two examples.”

What belongs in the case, and what does not?

Focus entirely on work that fits the next level: your broader scope, the decisions you owned, and how you unblocked others. Tenure does not belong here. Simply being at a company for three years is not the bar for advancement.

Bring two strong examples. Make sure they are achievements your manager can easily repeat in a calibration meeting when you aren't in the room.

What do you ask them to do before you leave?

  1. “What does the packet still need?”
  2. “Who else has to support this?”
  3. “When is the calibration, and when will I hear?”

If your manager doesn't know the answers, politely ask who does. A promotion request that ends with 'let's just keep up the good work' lacks a clear owner.

How do you keep this from becoming a raise talk?

If they shift the conversation to money, guide it back smoothly. You might say, 'I'd like to get the level decided first.' In most companies, the pay bump naturally follows the title change. Mixing them gives the company a chance to offer a small bonus while skipping the promotion.

You can rehearse asking for the new level out loud on Eloquent. Checking the transcript afterward is a great way to ensure you didn't accidentally slip into asking 'am I ready' instead of making your case.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wait for them to offer the promotion?

If your company runs on a strict promotion cycle, you need to make sure you are on the list well in advance. Waiting quietly is usually how people miss the packet deadline.

What if they say the headcount is frozen?

Clarify whether the freeze applies to title changes or just to new budget. Ask when they expect it to lift, and find out exactly what you should focus on now so you are perfectly positioned for the next cycle.

Do I mention other companies that would give me the title?

Only bring up other opportunities if you have a real offer in hand and are ready to take it. A vague threat about the market is easily dismissed.
